The Logic Mill

About this site

In 2005 I wrote GEDmill, a program for building family tree websites. I published a free version, and sold a pro version to a satisfying number of customers. In 2009 I decided to move on to other projects and stopped selling and supporting GEDmill, instead releasing the program as free software. This website contains the text of the original GEDmill site, which has been decommissioned.

What is GEDmill?

Genealogy and family history research are becoming more and more popular, and with so many people online these days, sharing your research with others can be very rewarding. GEDmill is an easy-to-use program that lets you create webpages from your family history data. It accepts output from today's most popular family history programs and uses it to build elegant webpages.

Download GEDmill here. (Save file to disk before running it.)
GEDmill is now free and an open-source project, meaning it is supported by a community of volunteers.

Support

Regrettably I no longer have time to support GEDmill and add new features or correct bugs. If you wish to file a bug, or a feature request, please create an account at BerliOS (GEDmill's new home), and submit the request there. (Please also encourage any software-savvy contacts of yours to get involved with the GEDmill source code!)

Features

GEDmill's main features are:

  • Creates a separate page for each individual, listing key events in their life, alongside a photograph (if available) and a family tree diagram.
  • Provides references to all sources. Lets you see at a glance where a piece of information has come from, with images of certificates, official documents etc. where available.
  • Option to hide certain individuals. Keep information about living relatives or others out of the website, at your discretion.
  • Works with all good family history programs. Accepts family history data in GEDCOM format. All good family history programs have the option to export data in this format. GEDmill was designed with GEDCOM 5.5 in mind, which is the latest non-markup version of the GEDCOM standard, but it can handle data in earlier formats too!
  • Creates standards compliant HTML web pages. All webpages are W3C XHTML 1.0 compliant.
  • Generate files for a self-playing CD-ROM, a great way to share your family history with others without the need for a website.

System Requirements

GEDmill requires a PC running Windows XP, Vista, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 (and Internet Explorer version 4 or above to display the program help screens.)
If you have an older computer you may also need to install Microsoft's .NET Framework.

GEDmill is now free!

GEDmill is now free open source software. Version 1.11.0 is the current version, and it incorporates all the features of the old GEDmill Pro. The copyright is still retained by me, but the source code is available to the open source community. If you're a software developer interested in getting involved, visit the GEDmill project at BerliOS. For more information, please email me.
